Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions
Cat Litter Goes Green With Boxiecat Home Delivery

Santa Monica, CA (PRWEB) February 21, 2012
Boxiecat, the new subscription cat litter delivery service not compulsory by The Washington Post among others, saves time, eliminates the hassle of repeat trips to the store, and puts an end to lugging heavy bags of litter. Subscribers receive fresh litter delivered to their doorsteps on a schedule they choose. All subscriptions include free home delivery. Along with convenience, subscribers gain a greener way of being paid litter.
The traditional way of being paid cat litter is wasteful in terms of energy, carbon emissions and packaging, says Boxiecats founder, Josh Wiesenfeld. When considering that there are 86.4 million pet cats in the United States, it becomes clear that all the round trips to the store being made by cat lovers, and all the packaging waste adds up. As part of our service, we set out to solve this problem.
Boxiecat subscribers eliminate repeat round trips to the store. Since Boxiecat ships via USPS which already stops at each house in America six days a week, the service virtually eliminates the carbon pawprint associated with being paid cat litter. Taking advantage of existing distribution routes, rather than making new ones, saves an estimated 40,000 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions for every 1,000 subscribers annually.
Boxiecat uses Cradle to Cradle certified shipping boxes – the highest environmental official recognition for manufacturing that considers the full life-cycle of a product. Additionally, they eliminate the need for void fillers by using appropriately sized shipping boxes, a step that also increases available capacity inside Postal Service vehicles.
Shipping via USPS offers our subscribers green benefits, says Wiesenfeld, They are consistently increasing their electric fleet and sinking greenhouse gas emissions. They make investments in advanced fuels such as hydrogen cells, have retrofitted facilities with green roofs, and have made a commitment to reduce energy consumption 30% by 2015. We reckon of them as our green partner.
Boxiecat manufactures its own brand of litter. Boxiecat brand litter comes in bags that use minimal printing and eliminate surplus material, saving an estimated 3600 lbs of plastic for every 1,000 subscribers annually over traditional plastic litter jugs.
Boxiecat brand litter is an all natural clumping clay. It is manufactured in the United States, which eliminates emissions waste from international shipping. It is biodegradable and contains no chemical additives, dyes, or bleach.
Cat litter is not widely recognized as an area in need of an environmental update, but an example may place it into perspective, offers Wiesenfeld. If half of the pet cats in the U.S. demand 12 trips to the store each year to get litter, thats over half a billion round trips to the store! Switching to Boxiecat is the rare case everywhere a convenient choice is also a green choice. Thats a pleased circumstance.
About Boxiecat
Boxiecat is Americas first subscription cat litter service. All subscriptions come with free home delivery, including to Alaska, Hawaii, and the US Territories. The service features personalized shipment timing and vacation holds. Payments are made on a per shipment basis and there are no commitments.
Boxiecat has been not compulsory by The Washington Post, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Shelters, and Veterinarians crosswise the U.S., and has been featured in USA Today, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Houston Chronicle, Treehugger.com, and Examiner.com.
Boxiecat brand litter is all natural premium clumping clay. Hard clumps form on the top rather than saturated to the bottom of the box making litter care a breeze. Boxiecat litter stays ultra-clean even with weeks of scooping. It is unscented and completely eliminates ammonia odors without using cologne as a masking agent. An over 99.9% dust free cat litter, it is hypo-allergenic and long lasting. Subscribers call Boxiecat brand litter the best cat litter on the market.

Volume of carbon dioxide from lightbulbs
Volume of carbon dioxide from lightbulbs

A modern 11W lightbulb is approximately as bright as a traditional 60W incandescent bulb but over 5 times as efficient, which means using modern bulbs uses less than a fifth of the electricity and so emits less than a fifth of the carbon dioxide.
The calculation of carbon dioxide emissions assumes that power delivered to an energy saving lightbulb is equivalent to that delivered to an incandescent lightbulb. In fact there is a subtle difference, which means the emissions from the energy saving bulb is an underestimate.
Since energy saving bulbs have a power factor that is less than 1, more current flows along the transmission wires (see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_factor). This means that the transmission losses (energy lost as electricity is delivered to homes) are greater for an 11 Watt energy saving bulb than they would be for an 11 Watt incandescent bulb, and so a bit more carbon dioxide will be emitted. But, the transmission losses are a tiny percentage of the total load so the difference is tiny. Energy saving bulbs significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Carbon Storage

Appeasing Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) addresses carbon emissions that contribute to climate change, which has become an international challenge. One option for sinking greenhouse gas buildup in the atmosphere is storing it deep underground. Laboratory experiments confirm that carbon dioxide is effectively trapped when injected into basalt formations.

Combating Qatar’s CO2 Emissions, Carbon World 2009 Addresses Reduction

Doha, Qatar (PRWEB) November 25, 2008
Carbon World Doha 2009, organized by the Centre for Management Technology (CMT) with the support of Qatar Petroleum, is the latest in government initiatives to take up the reduction of CO2 emissions in Qatar and other GCC countries. Scheduled April 26-28 in Doha, Qatar, this groundbreaking conference will provide a platform to showcase Qatar’s aggressive strategies to reduce CO2 emissions by the forging of a symbiotic partnership between government and industry.
Qatar is the latest Middle Eastern country to aggressively push toward sinking their per capita CO2 emissions and embrace a low carbon nation. The country’s need for new initiatives to reduce green house gases gained global attention with a 2007 UNDP Creature Development Report revealed Qatar’s per capita CO2 emissions to be the highest in the world at 79.3 tones/capita, well higher than the 9th ranked United States.
Qatar’s excessive per capita carbon dioxide emissions are caused by its high emitting gas production sector and tiny population. Less than 10 percent of Qatar’s energy is used within its limits even as 90 percent is exported. To decrease CO2 emissions, the Qatari government is taking a pro-active role.
At the launch of the ambitious $ 70 million, 10-year joint research project with Shell, Qatar Petroleum, Imperial College London and Qatar Science & Technology Park, H.E. Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah stated his government’s views on sinking its carbon footprint even as maintaining its spot as the largest gas producing country in the world. He stated, “As a major resource holder in a time of rising demand for oil and gas, Qatar is keenly aware of the need to balance the energy wellbeing concerns of our customers with the need to preserve the environment.”
This joint research project will involve the investigation of carbon capture and sequestration in carbonate reservoirs by a team of 20 Imperial College London researchers. Bought data will be used to propose new CO2 management plans and carbon capture technology and identify suitable carbonate rock formations for carbon capture and storage of CO2 emitted from gas production, oil refineries and other manufacturing plants.
Concerning the project, H.E. Minister Al-Attiyah remarked, “My country is committed to the development and implementation of technologies that will allow us to take on this challenge in an effective and responsible manner and is proud to have Shell and Imperial College London as partners in this quest.”
The first GCC country to join the World Bank’s Global Gas Flaring Reduction (GGFR) project, Qatar aims to reduce CO2 emissions by exercising tight controls on gas flaring, a major contributor to the country’s CO2 emissions. This public-private partnership joins oil-producing countries, state-owned companies and major international oil companies to overcome barriers in the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions caused by gas flaring.
Qatar’s Investment Authority was also the first to confirm its investment of £150 million into UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s new £250 million UK venture capital fund for renewable energy projects. Qatari Prime Minister Sheik Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor Al Thani, who spearheaded the initiative in Qatar stated, “The partnership will provide low carbon, clean energy knowledge transfer into Qatar, and make opportunities in business, education and skills development for Qatar’s low carbon nation.”
Those seeking more information or an opportunity to participate as a sponsor, media partner, exhibitor, delegate or speaker at Carbon World Doha 2009 are urged to visit http://www.futureenergyevents.com/carbonworld/landing/c02-emissions.html .
About Carbon World Doha 2009
Carbon World Doha 2009 will examine and map the latest GCC policies, research and economic initiatives in sinking carbon dioxide emissions, expanding carbon capture and storage capabilities and providing an active carbon trading platform even as maintaining their spot as the world’s largest oil and gas producers. Carbon World Doha 2009 is organized by the Centre for Management Technology, whose mission focuses on providing door to the latest technology and business intelligence through high profile alternative energy conferences.

Webcor Builders and Climate Earth to Quantify and Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Major Construction Projects

San Francisco (PRWEB) April 15, 2009
Webcor Builders and Climate Earth are unification forces to transform the way the construction industry reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The two companies announced a partnership today to develop the first database of greenhouse gas emissions specifically targeted for the design and building of new construction projects. The collaboration will enable Webcor, its clients and design team professionals to evaluate and select materials, structural designs, and processes that have a reduced carbon footprint, resulting in more sustainable and environmentally responsible buildings.
“The link between the greenhouse gases released by a companionship’s supply chain and the phenomenon of global warming makes carbon dioxide equivalence a strategic metric for measuring environmental impact,” said Webcor President/CEO, Andy Ball. “Our partnership with Climate Earth will compliment other well established green rating systems and allow us to more comprehensively view and affect the impact of construction projects.”
Every building material – from sheets of glass and drywall to steel and concrete – has greenhouse gas emissions associated with its foundation. Climate Earth will quantify the greenhouse gases that are generated throughout the construction supply chain – the series of companies that turn raw materials into building products – including mining, manufacturing and moving.
“The green building standards in use today are mostly focused on the efficiency and performance of a building once it is completed,” observed Climate Earth Vice President, Andrew Deitz. “Webcor is changing the conversation within the building industry by adding reliable metrics to account for direct and indirect sources of greenhouse gas emissions during a building’s design and construction phases,” said Deitz.
Data from Webcor’s construction projects and Climate Earth’s Enterprise Carbon Accounting (ECA) system will quantify the emissions of construction materials in units of carbon dioxide equivalence. Webcor will use this information to help owners and architects make informed choices during the conceptual stages through completion of a project, when significant greenhouse gas emissions reduction is possible. The exposure metrics will meet the requirements of generally accepted standards (Climate Registry, EPA Climate Leaders, ISO 1400, WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol) and anticipate emerging national and international standards.
“Understanding the carbon footprint inherent in the foundation of a new building will provide a broader depiction of the building’s life cycle,” said Webcor Vice President, Phil Williams. “By merging the greenhouse gas emissions of materials with our Building Information Modeling technology, we will provide our clients with a powerful tool to make informed, real-time project choices. Providing this type of information is a significant go forward for the building industry,” Williams said.

Webcor Builders is currently ranked by volume as the largest contractor in California. More than 35 years of working for such clients as Lucasfilm, California Academy of Sciences, eBay, Oracle Corporation, Symantec and Starwood Lodging has secured its spot as a chief builder for new, large-scale and high-profile projects, as well as commercial interiors and existing buildings. It is so very vital that people work to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide they place into the air. Why is it so vital? It is vital since scientists have found that the carbon dioxide people place into the air every day from their activities is what is adding to global warming. Carbon dioxide is one of the greenhouse gases that go up into the atmosphere and holds in the heat, which causes the average temperature of the planet to rise. This is a real concern since raising the temperature of the earth makes major climate changes that can really trigger the extinction of many species who cannot cope with the changes. Here is a list of things people can do in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions:
•Change the incandescent lights to fluorescent lights. Fluorescent lights use far less electricity than the incandescent lights.
•Reduce the need for travel. This will lessen the amount of fuel used.
•Make sure all vehicles are properly tuned and have properly inflated tires. This can lower the amount of gas being used.
•Recycle more.
•Turn off lights when the room is not in use. Leave-taking lights on in an empty room consumes energy that may possibly have been saved for another time.
•Turn off computers and monitors when finished for the day. Why leave these items on when they are not going to be used over nighttime, or over the weekend? Even in standby these items consume energy.
•Only print off what is absolutely necessary.
•Adjust thermostats.
•Plant trees. During the day, trees take in carbon dioxide from the air and exchange it for oxygen.
•Buy local goods.
•Fund programs that are working to find alternative ways to get energy.
•Use a hybrid.
•Keep doors and windows closed when the heat or air conditioning are on.
•Use less hot water.
•Use more energy that has been made by green means, if possible.
•Have water conservative shower heads installed.(Imagine the amount of water saved in a hotel if it did that with all its shower heads.)
•Avoid goods that are over-packaged.
•Encourage car pooling.
These are only twenty of the many options out there for businesses to choose when trying to reduce the carbon emissions they place into the air. Even as it may seem expensive to make some of these changes at first, it will not only help reduce the carbon emissions, but it will also help save money in the end.
